By night, she explores her darker side by writing highly erotic novels of bondage and submission under the pen name Victoria Tarlatan. Detective Cole Berkley is Alex’s longtime partner and best friend. He doesn’t know anything about her secret hunger to be mastered, but he’s about to find out. A serial killer is working his dark magic, transforming wicked women into works of erotic art. His hapless victims are found tied to the bed in classic bondage poses, strangled and tortured in unspeakable ways.
Can Alex hold on to her secret while being forced to play out her most private fantasies with her partner? And can Cole handle the change in his tough-as-nails partner from one of the guys to a woman with deeply erotic needs? The friction between them will soon be the least of their worries. The killer has a list of intended victims. Victoria Tarlatan is on it, making Alex next in line for the killer’s transformation. Will she pay for her Dangerous Cravings with her life?

Except for the BDSM theme, I would almost call this “romantic suspense” evangline “romantic mystery” rather than erotica.
The heroine is a cop who secretly fantasized about being submissive and is a BDSM author. The hero is her cop partner who is naturally dominant but has no interest in the BDSM “scene” and who only dominates her to please her. With the exception of a few cheesy sections here cravins there, the writing was well done and crisp with interesting situations and unique characters.
But the “erotic” part was pretty weak. There are really only two sex scenes and a couple of very tame BDSM scenes.
It was steamy but I’ve read Kresley Cole and Lisa Kleypas books that are much hotter and even more graphic than the scenes in this book and neither of them get listed as “erotic fiction”. I guess the spanky-panky puts it automatically in that genre. Perhaps unfair to the author whose book is overlooked in the contemporary romance category and forced in to a very niche genre. Some of it was new material – the introduction of a BDSM “trainer” who gave pointers.
That was kind of sexy. But I was kind of put off by the constant references to the notion that liking a little dominance or pain with sex in relationships is “sick” and “wrong”.
Then it is over-explained and justified – sort of. Is the author trying to rationalize why she’s writing about this stuff? Seems like if you’re reading this kind of book, you want to just enjoy the fantasy – we don’t need half a book of lecture about it. Unfortunately a lot of books in this genre do exactly that, and this was another disappointing example.
Despite my complaints, it had a strong story and if you aren’t looking for erotic fiction, a la Emma Holly, Lora Leigh, or Opal Carew, then this is a pretty good book.
FictFact – Dangerous Cravings series by Evangeline Anderson
This book was very well written. The author takes us to the deep friendship shared by Alex and Andeeson, who work together as homicide detectives. They are working on a case to find a murderer that wants to ‘right’ efangeline world of perversions, particularly, the kind of women who are into BDSM. What isn’t known to Cole craving that time, is that Alex has secret BDSM fantasies that she writes about dqngerous her books and publishes as e-books.
She uses a pen name, and so do the other women in this story that the killer is after, who share the craavings desires as Alex. Alex is as tough as nails in her job as detective. Cole wouldn’t trust anyone but her to watch his back. She wants her secret life fantasies to remain that way because she doesn’t want to lose Cole’s respect, nor does she want her ‘dirty’ secret exposed to her co-workers. In Alex’s writing, she evangrline the submissive, who loses control to her Master.
This goes against her constant need for control on her job to prove that she is dangeroud best woman in the field. As Cole and Alex begin to unravel this case, Cole realizes that Alex has a secret side to her, one he never imagined because she never showed him any indication of this in all the time he has known her. At first, he rejects this, as some sort of depravity he just can’t understand, but the more he learns through their undercover assignment, is that he has some tendencies of his own that he never explored as a Dominant.
They both meet with a ‘Mistress’ who tries to help them crack this case. She makes Cole understand that Alex’s true needs are not the same things as wants. Cole loves Alex and Alex loves Cole but both keep things underwrap until they are able to see that they can truely trust each other in private matters, the way they do in their public personas.
The book provides a great story where every alternating chapter is written by Alex then Cole. It gives the writer a better depth of understanding of their struggles both on the job and off as they grapple to keep their partnership and hidden desires separate.
